Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about AiSA’s Organic Agribusiness Course — from format and schedule to funding and prerequisites.
What is the difference between the 6-week and 12-week cohorts?
The 6-week course is designed for full-time focus — ideal if you can dedicate yourself entirely to the program. The 12-week course covers the same material but at a slower pace, designed for people who work a 9-to-5 job and are taking the course on the side.
How many hours of instruction is the cohort?
We deliver approximately 240 hours of instruction in the 6-week cohort. You’ll complete 16 semester credits in six weeks — that’s roughly a three-unit college course every seven days.
Can I train on the farm?
Yes! There are optional farm labs — up to 2 days per week during the 6-week cohort, or 1 day per week during the 12-week cohort. The labs are optional and not required for graduation. If it doesn’t work for you to come to the farm during the course, you’re welcome to complete the labs after you graduate.
Is this a 100% online course?
Yes. Classes are held on Zoom, and homework is housed on an online platform called Canvas. Farm labs for students that live locally are optional and not required for graduation.
Do I need any prerequisites?
No prerequisites are required. All details of the course will be explained on the first day of class.
What if I change my mind and decide not to take the course?
If you drop from the class less than 2 weeks prior to the first day of class, you will be charged a $150 registration fee by the University of Minnesota Crookston. Once a student has been registered, they have an official transcript — even if they cancel all of their classes. This fee covers the maintenance of their record and the sending of official transcripts.
Students are entitled to a full refund of tuition only if they drop prior to the first day. There are no refunds as of the first day of the program. All students are ultimately responsible for the total cost of tuition, regardless of veteran benefits, grants, or other financial aid.
Can this course qualify me for FSA Farm Operating Loans?
Yes — our program is an approved program to satisfy the FSA’s education/training requirement for farm operating loans.
Is AiSA approved for GI Bill benefits?
Yes, AiSA programs are approved for GI Bill benefits, DoD SkillBridge, and Military Tuition Assistance. Thanks to Stand for the Troops and the Farmer Veteran Coalition, we also have grants available to help cover the cost of attendance.
What certifications will I earn through this program?
You will earn four industry-recognized credentials: a Hydroponicist Specialist Certification, a ServSafe Food Handlers/Managers Certification, a Certificate of Completion in Sustainable Agriculture through the University of Minnesota Crookston, and 16 transferable college credits toward an undergraduate degree or certificate in Agricultural Business.
What programs are available to help veterans start a farm?
Several resources are available to veteran farmers:
- Farmer Veteran Coalition Fellowship Fund — Grants up to $5,000 for veterans establishing or expanding agricultural businesses.
- USDA Farm Loan Programs — Financial assistance for purchasing land, equipment, and farming resources through the Farm Service Agency.
- AiSA Agribusiness Program — Accredited training in sustainable agriculture, business planning, and modern farming technologies, funded through GI Bill, SkillBridge, or Tuition Assistance.
